Kitchen Manager at Colorado School Fired for Buying Lunch for a Poor Student

Is this the America we have become? A nation in which oligarchs and white collar criminals are allowed to destroy the economy, use bailout funds to pay themselves record bonuses and face absolutely no consequences, while the growing underclass of peasants are locked up, harassed and looted for the most minor offenses? Yes, indeed it is. We have become little more than a cowed, spineless and spiritually castrated nation.

This website has provided countless examples of how dangerously corrupt our legal system and moral code have become. Here are just a few recent examples:

Meanwhile…

The U.S. Department of Justice Handles Banker Criminals Like Juvenile Offenders…Literally:

This is a fallen society, and if we don’t reverse the trend fast, it’s only going to get much more unjust and oppressive.

Today, I bring you the latest example of a kind person being severely punished for demonstrating simple humanity. From CBS News:

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) – Della Curry is out of work, and unashamed, after being fired by the Cherry Creek School District.

A married mother of two, Curry is the former kitchen manager at Dakota Valley Elementary School in Aurora. She lost her job on Friday after giving school lunches to students who didn’t have any money.

“I had a first grader in front of me, crying, because she doesn’t have enough money for lunch. Yes, I gave her lunch,” Curry said.

In the district, students who fail to qualify for the free lunch or reduced lunch program receive one slice of cheese on a hamburger bun, and a small milk.

“I’ll own that I broke the law. The law needs to change,” she said.

Recall how bankers always remind us that they “didn’t break the law,” while thieving everything within arm’s reach from the human race. Something is very, very wrong.

Parent Darnell Hill says Curry had helped out his son when he forgot his lunch money.

He said, “Do something different than fire her. She’s trying to help.”

Curry said she understands the school district was just following policy when it fired her. Now she’s hoping her story will lead to some changes.

“If me getting fired for it is one way that we can try to change this, I’ll take it in a heartbeat,” she said.

This is a brave, caring and thoughtful woman. Think about the terrible incentives society is demonstrating to people when something like this occurs.

Meanwhile, across the pond, London is looking to fine homeless people £1,000 for sleeping near popular tourist spots. Because that makes so much sense.

From Metro UK:

Homeless people could be fined up to £1,000 for sleeping in doorways near popular tourist spots, under new rules launched by a London council.

It’s not clear how destitute rough sleepers are expected to pay.

Of course, demonizing and criminalizing homelessness has been a growing trend in the “land of the free” for many years now. See:

  1. I’m doing my part for change. I’ve taken the Beretta Storm and the Bennelli M3 out of storage and I’m practicing with them. This is not going to end by petitioning them, voting in a new set of political criminals, responding to regulatory agency surveys, asking questions at town hall meetings, cluck-clucking to neighbors or even writing posts like this.

It is going to change when the whole regime cracks and collapses under the weight of its own unalloyed rottenness, filth and corruption. At which point, my practice will, unfortunately, be well worth the time invested now.

  2. It Rubs the Lotion On Its Skin

“It rubs the lotion on its skin, or else it gets the hose again.”

Buffalo Bill, The Silence of the Lambs

“Fed officials want to start raising the cost of your borrowing because they worry they’ve been giving you a free ride for too long with zero interest rates. We listen to Fed officials all of the time here at The Wall Street Journal, and they just can’t figure you out.”

Jon Hilsenrath, The Wall Street Journal

So the moneyed class asks their servants to ask you, Why aren’t you out there, recovering? Are you trying to make the Fed and the Congress and the Mighty Reformer himself look bad?

But, alas, the rest of the American public, that broad base of consumption, is living pretty much hand to mouth, with little savings to cushion any sort of shock like a sickness or major car repair, and is facing very dire prospects for their non-retirement. There are plenty of shit jobs for poverty wages if you live near a gated community of the wealthy, but that is about it.

Is it the credibility trap, that causes the pampered princes of New York and Washington to so totally misread the public, and the actual conditions they manage and forecast for their own country? Is their blindness willful, an artifact of the credibility trap, or do they just live such sequestered, privileged lives that they have lost all contact with reality?

So get out there and buy, and work harder, and quit your whining you stupid sods.

Dangerous times, my friends, when the ruling class has lost even their meager sense of the public mood. And yet they always seem to be so surprised, each time they steer the economy into the ditch.

    • This is exactly why we all can protest by NOT spending money. No on fast food, anything extra. Boycott Walmart, etc. Just stop. Bring them to their knees. Use a water bottle, not bottled water. Go back to old times.

They steer the economy into the ditch on purpose…so they can Hegelian dialectic a new increased control solution. Cashless society? they track and tax every little bit of currency you handle. That’s what they are already promising us if we keep being sheep. Oh, and don’t forget much of the real economy is spending cash. Any idea of how much business that is?

  3. I’ve been watching this story develop and I smell a rat. Having watched several interviews of Della Curry, I suspect there’s far more to this story than her allegation that she was fired for serving food to hungry children. Over a fairly long career in talk radio, I learned to take many of these “can you believe this” stories slow because, if not, you often end up broadcasting falsehoods. Curry has all the signs of someone who is not being honest about the circumstances surrounding her termination.

    • Here’s what they say on their website: direct cut & paste. No mention on worker’s firing, I noticed.

Statement from the Cherry Creek School District regarding CBS4 news story
While Colorado law prohibits the Cherry Creek School District from commenting on personnel matters, we would like to take this opportunity to provide information not covered in the CBS4 story.

Decisions regarding food service workers are made by the district Food and Nutrition Services department and not by a school’s principal.

The law does not require the school district to provide a meal to children who have forgotten their lunch money – that is a district decision. According to our practice, we provide hot meals to students the first three times they forget their lunch money and charge their parents’ accounts. The fourth time, we provide a cheese sandwich and milk. No child is ever allowed to go without lunch.

The district does receive some funding from the federal government for free and reduced lunches for children living in poverty. For those students who qualify for a reduced lunch price, we cover the remaining cost and do not charge the student. Nearly one-third of Cherry Creek School District students receive free lunches every day under the federal Free and Reduced lunch program.

The district has worked to keep lunch prices low and still meet the federal nutrition requirements. The costs of our lunch program are not covered by the prices we charge. At the end of the year, any unpaid accounts are covered by the general fund which also includes instruction, security, building maintenance and overall operations.

Again, no child is ever denied a meal due to the inability to pay.

  4. They are prevented by state law from disclosing the circumstances of Curry’s dismissal unless Curry waives the law and allows disclosure. Curry has refused to waive the law. That is one of the reasons that I suspect there is more to this than alleged by Curry. Having said that, I agree with your overall point and, as I think you know, support your efforts on this site.

  5. Let’s start a phone campaign to the Dakota Valley Elementary in Aurora complaining about a hungry first grader being legally refused lunch. If they get over 50 calls, and I’ll be making more than one, that will shame them into change. This is outrageous. OUTRAGEOUS.
