  1. Venezuela knocking off zeroes is a hoot! As a long-time syngraphist (studier of paper money) I can say that many central banks have knocked off zeroes in inflationary times, and those zeroes magically grow back.

In the case of Zimbabwe, once they hit the hyperinflationary mark (prices doubling every 24 hours), the increase in the number of zeroes exceeded the bank’s ability to remove them! The infamous $100,000,000,000,000 note was due to be trimmed by twelve zeroes just as all faith in the currency collapsed. They could have removed 20 zeroes and made a -$10,000 bill if they wished, but if absolutely no business can be conducted with a bank note, there is no purpose to it, is there?

Turkey is another country infamous for zero theft. They have done so a couple of times and intend to do so again soon. However, since the policies that brought about rampant inflation are not going to change, “zero growth” is baked into the Turkish pie.

Thank you for this informative post. I’m so thankful I don’t live in Turkey, which is under a de facto dictatorship by the Islamic fundamentalist Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, or in Venezuela, which is under a de facto dictatorship with Nicolás Maduro Moros. Then again, my own nation is a de facto plutocratic oligarchic corporatocracy. It just lacks the creepy cult of personality centered on figures like Erdoğan and Moros. Or perhaps not, since #MAGA and “God Emperor” and “Golden Toad”, etc. all smack of cult of personality. But whereas Erdoğan and Moros will serve for life (unless forcibly ousted or murdered), presidential terms here are a very short four years.

Anyway, I hope to see you post more.
