Canada Goes Completely Insane with New “Anti-Terror” Laws

I never understood the view of some Americans who somehow think Canada will be a sort of “safe haven” destination after the financial system blows up.  That it is some sort of bastion of freedom and democracy.  For those that still adhere to this view, you’d better take a close look at the new “anti-terror” legislation being jammed through at the moment, Bill S-7.

Meanwhile, how convenient was it that Canada just happened to “foil” a terrorist plot just as this bill was being voted on.  From the CBC:

A new anti-terrorism bill, which passed the House of Commons Wednesday night and received royal assent Thursday, revives provisions from the Anti-terrorism Act passed just after the Sept. 11 attacks and adds some new ones.

“Royal assent.” Sounds appropriately neo-feudal doesn’t it.

Some controversial measures, such as investigative hearings and preventive detentions, which some fear might violate civil rights, have been restored. Some new sections in the bill seem tailored to thwart the early planning stages of an act of terrorism.

Here are eight things to know about the bill passed this week:

1.  Investigative hearings are reinstated
An individual can be forced to appear at a secret hearing without any charges being laid if authorities believe he or she has knowledge of a terrorist activity. The individual must appear and answer questions or risk being jailed for up to 12 months.

2.  Preventive detentions are reinstated
An individual can be held for up to three days on suspicion of being involved with terrorism. Upon release, he or she can be ordered to uphold probation-like conditions, such as not contacting certain people, for up to 12 months, without ever being charged with any offence.

Yep, Canada seems to be following America’s lead.  We must take away our own freedoms before the terrorists have a chance to.  Brilliant.

  1. Short answer on Canada. During the Vietnam war Canada was a safe haven for those dodging the draft and refusing to go. That sentiment and myth has remained though – as you point out – it has ‘caught up’ with the devolution of the American Republic. Mass production and pyramidical, corporate control REQUIRES this homogenization. In many respects, this trend is world wide.

  2. Jeff Berwyck recently opined that he expects the US to take over Canada for its resources when the SHTF.

Crazy sounding, but clearly our leaders will steal anything they can get away with. They would likely do it via more subtle means than at gunpoint, imo. Neocolonialism is a well-honed art at this point.

Maybe they’ve already done it? Who’s buying all the hyper-depressed resource stocks?

    Jim Sinclair, yesterday:

    2. Located out of the reach of North America or Euroland…”

  3. USA and Canada will just merge after the SHTF. It’s the same bankers that control both. Of course if the banking system goes away and Bitcoins replaces it the bankers won’t have any power at all.

If you want to know how free a country is just check their manners at the borders when coming or going. The worse they are (TSA, Immigration), the worse the country is for freedoms. The nicer they are, the better they are for freedoms, especially for foreigners. Canada is a total disaster for manners at the borders. That’s tells you all you need to know.

  4. Living in Canada today and watching the U.S. turn into a totalitarian police state is like living in Austria in the 1930s and watching the Nazis take oner Germany. You know your country will probably be next.
