Video of the Day – John Oliver on Municipal Fines and Private Probation Companies

When a nation’s economy becomes nothing more than an oligarch crime scene; a gross perversion of the free market best characterized by corruption, theft and in which the sole motivation is to grab as much as possible without regard to ethics, it’s no surprise that entire industries emerge designed to take advantage of the poor and disenfranchised. I’ve covered many examples of this over the years, with the latest example being earlier this month in the post: Profiting from Prisoners – How Jails Partner with Private Firms to Charge for Video Calls While Ending Visitation Rights.

John Oliver has done a fantastic job covering such topics, and his latest segment is both really sad and really important. It covers how private probation companies, specifically Sentinel Offender Services and Judicial Correction Services, parasitically feed off the weak in partnership with local governments. Take a watch:

  1. Watched that last night! I was appalled!

I know you have covered the system abusing those who can least afford it before. It really hit home with the video.

Thanks for covering this atrocity more!

  2. I don’t know what’s worse, the unending posts you write about describing how screwed up things are or the fact that very few people are aware of these happenings or perhaps they really don’t care enough and consequently there just doesn’t seem to be a damn thing anyone can do to put a stop some of this nonsense.
There’s a whole generation of younger people out there who think this BS is normal and fewer and fewer of us old enough to know that it isn’t.

  3. A system built on greed, graft, and theft shall not long stand…

    Weep for America.

[Better yet, clean out the rat’s nest of local politicians that vote for traffic cams, ridiculous fines, and privatization to companies that feed off the weak. Time to take out the trash.]

  4. You can blame politicians–mostly Republicans–who believe in privatizing everything. How many times do they tell you that government is bad and that private business does it better?

Secondly, as long as big corporations pay little or no tax, the stupid average American has to foot the bills. Conservatives who tell you that the “job creators” deserve all the money are actually teaching you to be debt slaves. Unless Americans figure out they are being scammed, nothing will change.
