The Chief Operating Officer of Facebook Wants to Ban the Word “Bossy”

No this is not a joke. When I first heard grumblings of this yesterday I ignored it as some sort of hyperbolic page-view hunting headline. Today, I finally decided to look into it and the story is even more outrageous than I imagined.

The most hypocritical aspect of this whole campaign is that it was launched by the COO of Facebook. Yes, rather than focusing on the fact that Facebook had been actively marketing adult webcam advertisements to underage girls in an attempt to earn more revenue, she is focused on the horrific repercussions of a single word.

Recall this line from my Facebook post:

Sophie wasn’t the only teen connecting with the page, which Facebook statistics show is most popular with users 13 to 17. Clicking on it didn’t pull the teens into nude webcam modeling, but did mean they would receive the page’s updates and could be mentioned in future versions of the ad.

Moving along, this article is in the same vein as the story I reported on yesterday regarding how Florida is set to imprison people for “bullying” of “cyber-bullying,” whatever that means. This is just another example of taking a problem and offering an idiotic solution.

Idiotic solutions, for an idiotic society. America in 2014.

From ABC:

Sandberg — the chief operating officer of Facebook and author of the best-selling book “Lean In” — is spearheading the launch of a campaign today to ban the word “bossy,” arguing the negative put-down stops girls from pursuing leadership roles.

Sandberg’s organization Lean In is joining forces with former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Girl Scouts USA CEO Anna Maria Chávez to launch a public service campaign called “Ban Bossy.” The banbossy.com website gives tips for parents, kids, teachers and others about how to encourage young female leaders.

“I was called bossy when I was in ninth grade,” Sandberg recalled. “My teacher took my best friend Mindy aside and she said, ‘You shouldn’t be friends with Sheryl. She’s bossy.’ And that hurt.

While she and the other women leaders she is recruiting were able to persevere despite the taunt, many little girls can’t, she said.

So Sandberg was called “bossy” and went on to become the COO of Facebook, yet other girls can’t overcome having a word thrown at them? Perhaps there are other factors at play here. How low of an IQ do you need to believe this bullshit?

“This is a word that is symbolic of systemic discouragement of girls to lead. We are not just talking about getting rid of a word, even though we want to get rid of a word,” she said. “We’re talking about getting rid of the negative messages that hold our daughters back.

Here’s Sheryl explaining her brilliant plan:

  1. thanks for posting this – I too heard about this a couple days ago and thought it to be a bad taste joke, with all the real liberties being removed, surely that was a jest, but no. Yesterday it was Beyonce endorsing the censorship and not-free speech move of “banning” “bossy”. What ! ? ! This follows on the equally absurd notion recently of the NFL endorsing the banning of the “n-word”, not even daring to print the evil “n-word”. It’s not an accident that Beyonce was performing @ the NFL halftime show at this years Superbowl. This is HOW we really move into serfdom by allowing such sad restrictions of the use of words. This follows the recent French action to BAN 4 certain historical books on banking because they expose the element of naming the who’s who in banking. This is a perfect time for the late-night shows Jimmy Kimmel and Fallon and Conan to BLAST this action for the preposterous attempt of banning free speech that it is. If they don’t go after this, then you know there is more in store for us to come in the very near future.

  2. Newspeak is explained in chapters 4 and 5 of Nineteen Eighty-Four, and in an appendix to the book. The language follows, for the most part, the same grammatical rules as English, but has a much more limiting, and constantly shifting vocabulary.
Any synonyms or antonyms, along with undesirable concepts are eradicated.

Sandberg served as chief of staff for the United States Secretary of the Treasury.

Summers recruited her to be his research assistant at the World Bank

  4. I wonder why she thinks that is is acceptable for boys to be bossy? I guess she just made it up. Being bossy probably refers to asserting leadership when the people being led either do not want to be led at all, or do not value the direction or attitude of the leader. I contend that no one has a problem with women taking leadership, while no one like a bossy person, male or female. I think that when people are being bossy, they should be told that they are being bossy.

  5. Let’s not forget the MEN’s ‘suffering’ in all this.

I guess we’re gonna have to ban “asshole” next as I’ve certainly worked for a few.

Geezus, the tyranny of political correctness.

  6. The bossy this girl was called by her teacher back in school was likely used quite rightly.. because she was a girl who liked to get her own way and liked everyone to do her bidding… she probably cried and got upset if everything didn’t go her way… sorry but in my book this does not a leader make… more like a spoiled child… what a joke and what a scary age we live in that someone of her repute feels brave or confident enough to come out with this line… pitty it all!
