There’s Only One Word to Describe Julian Assange’s Internet Being Cut Off – Pathetic

Let’s get right to it. Earlier today, Julian Assange had his internet access severed.

Here’s a translation of the statement from the government of Ecuador, in whose embassy he’s been trapped since 2012:

The Government of Ecuador suspended the systems that allow Julian Assange to communicate with the outside world from the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where the citizen remains in an international protection situation for six years due to the risk to his life and integrity.

The measure was adopted in the face of Assange’s failure to comply with the written commitment it assumed with the Government at the end of 2017, for which it was obliged not to issue messages that implied interference with other States.

The Government of Ecuador warns that the behavior of Assange, with its messages through social networks, puts at risk the good relations that the country maintains with the United Kingdom, with the rest of the States of the European Union and other nations. Therefore, to prevent potential damage, the embassy in London interrupted this March 27 communications abroad to which Assange has access.

The Executive also keeps open the way to the adoption of new measures in the face of breach of commitment by Assange.

The excuse for this egregious act against Assange is his social media activity “puts at risk the good relations that the country maintains with the United Kingdom, with the rest of the States of the European Union and other nations.” Naturally, we must ask what Assange has been tweeting about lately that prompted some bigger country, or countries, to force Ecuador’s hand. The answer is Catalonia.

I’ve been following Assange’s tweets closely following the revelation that German police seized Catalonia’s elected President Carles Puigdemont on behalf of Spain. Assange provided some much needed context and commentary about the disturbing incident over Twitter in recent days. Here are a few examples that likely ruffled the feathers of various EU governments.

The tweets above were quite informative, especially to someone like me who’s a U.S. citizen and had no understanding of the European Arrest Warrant (EAW) and its obvious potential for abuse. Clearly, the government of Spain (and possibly Germany & the UK) put an enormous amount of pressure on Ecuador behind the scenes since they don’t like it when people with large platforms challenge their silly, authoritarian narratives.

The fact these governments are so terrified of a guy holed up in an embassy tweeting his political opinions tells you how weak and insecure these governments really are. The first word that popped into my mind when I heard the news wasn’t outrageous, although it is outrageous. The very first word that came to mind was pathetic. The Spanish state is acting like a petty two-bit dictator that can’t handle some Twitter criticism. Embarrassing. Pathetic. Deranged.

Strong and confident nation-states don’t react like this, insecure and weak ones do. Which brings me to the next point. This ridiculous episode furthers my confidence that the massive centralized nation-states that dominate the world today will collapse and be restructured. It no longer makes sense to organize human affairs in such a centralized manner, particularly in our age of technological interconnectivity and instant access to information.

When individuals or nation-states gain too much power they always end up acting like abusive thugs. Humanity must shift away from monstrously centralized governance structures and restore sovereignty to a more local level. The pendulum has swung way too far in the authoritarian direction, and the results are clear. A loss of freedom, rampant corruption and zero accountability for “elites.” Julian Assange is simply the canary in the coal-mine for the rest of us.

Meanwhile, what else in going on in the world? Well there’s this…

  1. Love the guy. He has been a real friend to us here in the US of A. I wish there was something Trump could do about getting him out of the hole he’s been in for so long and find a place for him and his family here, with security provided. He could be a real asset to us.

    • Anne,

Why do you believe Trump would help Assange? Trump wants him arrested. The US is one of the nations putting pressure on Ecuador to end Assange’s aslyum and put him in a deep hole here in the US.

Trump could have helped Assange a long time ago. That’s not who Trump is.

  2. I guess this is how they are bringing the plane in for a landing. Julian Assange has not been in that embassy for several years. He was taken in 2016. He is either dead or in some CIA dungeon somewhere. I guess the usefulness of even some fake Assange tweets has been outlived, so don’t expect to hear any more from him.

  3. The desperation is palpable… when will they pull out the ABC weapons.. Atomic (dirty bomb somewhere?) Biological (ebola, Spanish Flu, etc?) Chemical (was the UK spy & daughter poisoning a False Flag?) (ABC was the acronym before Bush’s crew decided it wasn’t frightening enough, hence, WMD.)

And, yes… where did Gregannett get his info?

    • Nancy, point well taken, especially the MI6 false flag. But I believe you mean NBC – Nuclear, Biological, Chemical.

  4. Suggest you find a journalist who will explain this :

Spanish CNI operatives electronically tag Puigdemont’s car in a third country.

Basically this is illegal in any third country without permission from that country.

It is so blatant as to be overlooked.

  6. Oh WOW! Ophra is meeting with MBS. She’s got my 2020 vote for president, for sure!

Thank you for filling me in on the scoop. It made my day!

As to the other stuff, I think Moreno is a complete idiot. All he has to say to the people of Ecuador is that the US/UK/EU are putting pressure on him to comply with their illegal demands. I would like your (the people’s) help in resisting that pressure and telling them to f-off!

If he did that, he’d be president for life of S. America and probaby most of the world’s smaller nations. It’s not like the US and friends are loved. He’s really missing an opportunity here and I can’t believe someone as cynical as himself is missing it. He could do the right thing and be extremely popular. Why not?

(Threats are exactly the way we got the coalition of the willing.)

  7. I would build monuments to Julian Assange, Edward Snowden, and Chelsea Manning if I could! Only corrupt, facist traders want to prosecute them for exposing their tyrrany, corruption, and treason on the American people! Hey stupid government! Julian Assange is not even a U.S. citizen, so our laws, regardless of how stupid and evil they are, do not even apply to Assange!

Drop all charges on Assange and Snowden, or be considered evil, corrupt, fascist tyrrants!

I realize that this has no relevance to the article. Consider it a public service announcement!

Why Samsung sucks! Samsung keeps installing apps on my phone through pop-up ads on Zero Hedge in systems apps! I have NEVER downloaded a single app because I know that they spy! There were 440 systems apps on my device, which did not show up on my phone, or under app permissions which enabled themselves to everything and total control of my phone! I keep disabling these terrorist apps and Samsung just keeps reinstalling them! There are now 484 systems apps, which Samsung illegally installs through pop-up ads only on Zero Hedge for some strange reason!

  8. Here is another problem that I think is significant. There is a group forming to demand reconnect assange. It appears to be spearheaded by wealthy, “in” people recruiting celebrities to speak on Assange’s behalf.

While I am certainly grateful that celebrities will speak on behalf of Assange, this strategy fundametally mirrors the oligarchy’s belief that ordinary people’s voice are not of value or of less value. This is precisely one of the main problems in our society. Only the powerful are given voice and only their right to speak is valued. I would argue that in order to remove injustice this type of thinking must end. It is the voices and actions of the many which are unnecessary to protest injustice and gain justice.

We don’t need celebrity clubs/clicks, we need everyone who feels strongly to come together and form a protest. It seems like it is really difficult for even well meaning people to shake off the oligarchy’s paradigm. Every voice matters. Every person counts. The revolution will not work if it’s just one small group replacing another. It won’t work!

  9. Have to second Jill’s sentiment here. Why is the assumption that Trump is playing 5D chess when in reality he’s simply doing what he wants to do? He’s not an unknown quantity, he’s been in office for 14 months.

I know Trump’s supporters desperately want to believe he’s some sort of maverick, but it’s time for them to start looking at what he does as president, not what he said as a candidate.

  10. Tengen. I agree that Trump is not playing 5D chess. But he’s definitely not doing what he wants to do, either.

Donny boy is swimming in waters that are far deeper and more treacherous than he ever imagined. So all he’s trying to do at this point is tread water to keep afloat.

That’s exactly where the 4 Horsemen want him to be right now because he’s becoming very controllable.

In other news, Putin is quite aware of that as well. Same with Jinping.

As to Assange. I have zero doubts that he has a back-up plan in place for loss of internet access. It’s called a phone.

    • His phone is off limits as well as he is not allowed visitors. Basically, Assange is in solitary confinment.

As this breaks Equador’s laws, Assange’s lawyers are going to court. Meanwhile 3 Equadorian journalists have been kidnapped at the Columbian border.

Moreno is cracking down (like all the other authoritarians in charge of nations, both big and small).

Fully 8-in-10 believe that the U.S. government currently monitors or spies on the activities of American citizens, including a majority (53%)who say this activity is widespread…

  12. Jill, his lawyers are allowed access to him in the embassy and I haven’t seen anything that says he is not allowed to use a phone.

As to the 3 Ecuadoran journalists. They were kidnapped by Ecuadoran drug traffickers.

That has nothing to do with Assange’s situation with Ecuador.

  13. Genero,

“As to which “systems” the Ecuadorian government is referring to, WikiLeaks released a statement that Assange is no longer allowed to “tweet, speak to the press, receive visitors or make telephone calls.” Folks, outside of his actual detention, this is insane. Even prisoners get to make phone calls and receive visitors! Julian Assange has literally been cut off entirely from his family, friends, and the outside world.”

This is at wikileaks twitter and also here:

    https://jimmysllama.com/2018/03/29/ecuador-cuts-off-assanges-ties-to-the-outside-world/

Right now, many journalists are being kidnapped, imprisoned or killed. This is related to the loss of freedom of speech, freedom to think, freedom of movement and freedom of the press. Covering powerful entitites is dangerous!
