Trump’s Decision to Debate Sanders in California is His Most Genius Move Yet

Screen Shot 2016-05-26 at 2.01.08 PM

Here, a Clinton match-up is highly likely to be an unmitigated electoral disaster, whereas a Sanders candidacy stands a far better chance. Every one of Clinton’s (considerable) weaknesses plays to every one of Trump’s strengths, whereas every one of Trump’s (few) weaknesses plays to every one of Sanders’s strengths. From a purely pragmatic standpoint, running Clinton against Trump is a disastrous, suicidal proposition.

– From the February article: Why Hillary Clinton Cannot Beat Donald Trump

If the Trump/Sanders debate proceeds as planned in California, you’re about to witness one of the most important moments of a 2016 general election that hasn’t even begun yet. To say such a debate would be an unmitigated disaster for Hillary Clinton would be the understatement of the century. Let’s explore why.

First of all, Hillary Clinton outright rejected a debate request from Bernie Sanders ahead of the June 7th California primary. Given Sanders’ recent momentum, as well as her need to persuade a significant number of his supporters to back her in November; such a denial was not only arrogant, it was highly insulting to voters in America’s largest state. From team Clinton’s perspective there was little upside to agreeing to a debate, versus easily manageable downside from a few days of negative media coverage. Or so they thought…

The above strategic thought process would’ve worked in almost every other election season and against any other candidate. Unfortunately for her, it doesn’t work in 2016, and it certainly doesn’t work against Donald Trump.

Trump understands human nature as well as anyone I’ve ever observed. He’s also likely the most skilled natural politician of my lifetime, with perhaps the exception of Bill Clinton in his prime. Under conventional thinking, Trump would also certainly deny a Sanders debate request for the same reasons Clinton declined it. There’s little to gain in publicly battling a guy with nothing to lose, and you’ve already wrapped up the Republican nomination anyway. That said, Trump is far too savvy to fall victim to such straightforward thinking. He understands that debating Sanders in California ahead of the primary presents a once in a lifetime opportunity to embarrass and belittle Clinton in front of the whole world before the general election even begins.

Think about it for a second. Who cares what happens during the debate itself. Think about what the media will be saying. Think about how weak, irrelevant and stupid a Trump/Sanders contest will make Hillary Clinton look. As the largest state in the union heads to the voting booths Hillary Clinton can’t be bothered to have a discussion with Bernie Sanders, yet Donald Trump is more than willing. I can see the headlines already:

Hillary MIA in California?

Where in the World is Hillary?

Hillary Nowhere to be Found in California Primary.

You get the point. Trump will appear Presidential, while Hillary will look like a discredited Goldman Sachs crook hiding from a 74-year-old socialist. Which, by the way, is exactly what she’s doing.

Naturally, the whining hordes of Clinton sycophants and paid online trolls who don’t think they should have to work to secure the Presidency, will bitch and moan at Sanders. They’ll blame him for all her problems, when the truth is this disaster, like most of her disasters, is entirely of her own making. Hillary Clinton was offered the opportunity to debate Sanders in California. She declined. You can’t blame Trump for jumping on the opportunity to make her look extraordinarily stupid. That’s just politics.

  1. An excellent analysis….however with the Political Power Hillary’s Establishment Minions have….then Add in the Verbal/Printed Manure the Established Press will provide..the Debate will for the most part..just be presented as a ‘Political Circus’ between two political ‘losers’ thanks for reading, aloha

  2. Go Bernie Go, tell them you will end over sixty-five years of the abusive application of the state secrets privilege and related doctrine, act, executive order, administrative action, regulation and related policy abuses and tell them you support the ACLU’s effort to do the same.

  3. Okay, but there’s one problem. Bernie has every incentive to go all out to attack Trump to show that he’s the guy who would be the best nominee for the blue team. But Trump would like for some Bernie supporters to stay home or to cross the aisle to him. If he argues similarly hard against Sanders doesn’t he work against that?

    • Not at all. All Trump has to do is show a modicum of deference to Sanders for his crusade against Clinton to be viewed favorably. If he can dial back the sarcasm, play hard but fair with no cheap shots or crafted sound bites, he will look like the guy who recognizes Sanders as AUTHENTIC…the polar opposite of Clinton.

If you’re a Sanders fan and you see Clinton thumb her nose at your guy and Trump treat him with grudging respect if not kid gloves, don’t you think you might just put your figurative thumb in Hillary’s eye by pulling the Trump lever at the poll? I bet that hasn’t been lost on Trump.

If this debate is a relatively civilized affair it benefits BOTH Trump and Sanders. Trump looks presidential and the lack of partisan rioting shows that it is Clinton, not Sanders, who is resorting to those tricks. Because if there IS a riot, there is only one place it could come from and that’s outside the ring.

If Trump pulls this off, he is going to be both unstoppable and assayed politically as one of the most astute politicians ever who wasn’t a politician.

  4. It’s clear that the grovelling from websites such as this, which is promoted by Tyler Durden, over the increasing proselytising of Donald Trump (who is clearly a Galah), is getting so shrill, it’s making Americans look like Neolithic simpletons.

Clearly the headline of this story should be; “Sanders masterstroke: To debate Trump, is Sanders most genius move yet.

  5. conventional wisdom had it that the establishment Republicans were or are anti-Trump (which they are),
and that the establishment Democrats are anti-Sanders (also true)

the debate is going to be not between Trump and Sanders,
but between team Trump and Sanders, against Hilary.

She ought to turn up, so that she can defend herself,
she’s only got the mainstream to speak for her.

  6. We’ll only know for sure who will win and who will lose from a debate between Sanders and Trump until it’s happened and we see the reactions. I don’t feel able to guess, so I won’t.

I just want to point out that describing Trump as a “skilled politician” on the grounds that he’s good at saying and doing the sort of things that will make him popular and get him elected is making a very big mistake. The job of politicians, believe it or not, isn’t getting elected. Or it shouldn’t be, at any rate. Certainly the job of president is supposed to be mainly something else: negotiating and making difficult decisions.

Trump claims that he’s great at negotiating and making decisions, and says that his fortune proves it. But he inherited his fortune. Many people have pointed out that, considering the amount he inherited, his business performance is mediocre. He hasn’t made public his tax returns, and there are reasons to suspect it’s because he’s lied about the size of his fortune. There are even rumors that he ran for president as a way to avoid going bankrupt again (creditors aren’t that impatient when somebody may become a very powerful man soon). So it looks pretty likely that he is, in actual fact, rather bad at negotiating and/or making difficult decisions.

Given some of the things he’s said, it wouldn’t be a complete surprise that, if he became president, he’d make terrible decisions like getting America into WWIII, or putting large amounts of Latinos or Muslims in concentration camps. The last guy who put a whole ethnic group in concentration camps ended up killing himself in a bunker, and his country was divided in two for the next 50 years.

    • I’m not a Trump fan, so I’m not going to debate you on the criticisms.

I do disagree with you on what a politician is. All a politician is, is someone who will say whatever he or she needs to get elected. Someone who makes a career of taking credit for things when they go well, and denying responsibility for when they go wrong. What you refer to when you say politician is actually called a statesman. We need more statesmen (and stateswomen) and less politicians.

  7. Open Letter to The Trump Campaign Advertising Team,
Trump did no advertising yet his ratings kept going up during the primaries because people liked what he said he would do if elected. He did not need to pay for negative ads against his opponents! Every time he was attacked by the media his ratings went up. He did excellent by showing his strength and his quick thinking.

There are thousands of people that have never heard a complete sentence of what he said he would do if elected … they have only heard bits and pieces of what the media allowed.

For Trump to win, people need to hear his initial message, when he announced his candidacy. That message is the one that resonates with the people..

He said that we shouldn’t be part of globalism. That’s what people need to hear over and over!

The American people are fed up with slandering ads against political opponents. We no longer want to choose from the lesser of two evils!

We want to vote for the hero on the white horse that will bring prosperity and peace to us! Donald Trump can be portrayed as that hero. He can be positioned as such in the upcoming ads.

If I do not start to see some positive ads from the Trump Campaign you will turn me and thousands of Trump supporter off and we will go to the Libertarian Party.

Having said that, though, if his running mate turns out to be Jesse Ventura and he announces that Ron Paul will be his Secretary of State, nothing that you guys do wrong will stop me for voting for him!

Spend money on the internet… develop alliances there. That is where the people are nowadays!

  8. “Who cares what happens during the debate itself.” Who cares? Are you brain-dead or what? Oh, right, you support Trump, so that answers itself.

It’s pretty clear your head is up your ass. Trump is no politician, not even slightly. He’s an arrogant ass and will destroy this country as he continues to rake in billions more. Sanders has got his head on straight and would by far be the best President in the lineup we have this season. And the debate with Trump does matter you fucking nitwit. It’ll show the world how utterly stupid Trump really is on issue that matter. Issues that you do not care about.

  9. Love the idea of Clinton being absent from the Californian debate. Out of sight and hopefully out of mind, giving Bernie a chance to show a real alternative.
