Comeback Kid – Sanders Slashes Clinton’s New York Primary Lead to 12 Points

Nothing would please me more than to see Bernie Sanders defeat Hillary Clinton in the state of my birth, and where I spent most of my life: New York.

While it’s not going to be easy, the latest poll from Quinnipiac shows Sanders narrowing her lead to only 12 points. There’s a little less than three weeks until the April 19th primary, which means plenty of time to further close the gap.

Mother Jones reports:

Sanders is slowly gaining on Clinton in New York ahead of the April 19 primary. Clinton now leads Sanders by 12 points in New York’s Democratic primary, according to a Quinnipiac Poll released Thursday. A poll in February showed Sanders 21 points behind Clinton in New York, and another in March showed him 48 points behind.

Sanders’ growing support in New York is not altogether surprising. Born and raised in Brooklyn, the Vermont senator can also claim ties to the state. More important, the political climate in New York is favorable to Sanders. Areas of western New York resemble demographically the Midwestern states where Sanders has performed relatively well. And there is a blueprint for a progressive challenger in New York. In 2014, a law professor with no name recognition and little money or organization, Zephyr Teachout, won a third of the vote in her primary challenge to the state’s incumbent Democratic governor, Andrew Cuomo. Unlike Teachout, Sanders has plenty of money, name recognition, and a growing organization in the state.

Meanwhile, the Clinton campaign isn’t taking anything for granted, and is redoubling its efforts in the state. CNN reports:

When Hillary Clinton lost the New Hampshire primary to Bernie Sanders in February, Robby Mook, her campaign manager, took the long view and declared the nomination would “very likely be won in March, not February.”

The campaign is now taking an even longer view, with April now being the month they hope to put Sanders away. It’s an optimistic projection, with Sanders support far from fading and the Vermont senator vowing to compete in primaries and caucuses through June 7 in California, and possibly to the Democratic convention.

Even though Clinton aides say her lead in pledged delegates is “almost insurmountable,” they are now doing something they never expected: Investing considerable time and money to the April 19 New York primary.

Clinton is preparing to spend far more in New York than she originally budgeted, according to people close to the campaign, a fact that underscores how the campaign is girding for a fight and knows it needs to spend money to win. She leads Sanders 54% to 42%, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday morning.

Unfortunately for Sanders, the following will only help Shillery.

Clinton has several many advantages in New York, aides believe, including the state’s onerous voter registration laws. It also is a closed primary, meaning only Democrats can vote for Clinton or Sanders and the registration period has closed, unlike many other states that allow voters to register on Election Day.

Do the right thing, New York.

  1. I’m sure you realize that the chances of Bernie becoming the Dem nominee are the proverbial slim and none. Washerwoman Schultz has been rigging everything for HRC. The votes don’t matter.

The only person that can stop HRC now is Obomber.
