Civil Disobedience in Brooklyn – Artists Mount 4-Foot Tall Bust of Edward Snowden in NYC Park Overnight

In a creative expression of civil disobedience in New York City, artists installed a large bust of NSA whistleblower hero Edward Snowden in Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn.

This was no simple endeavor. The artists told Animal New York that it took the sculptor nearly 6 months to mold and complete the bust. With the weather finally cooperating, it was installed just before dawn today. Several news outlets have covered the story. First, the Washington Post notes that:

Three artists installed a bust of former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden in a Brooklyn park early this morning — fusing the sculpture on top of a memorial to Revolutionary War soldiers, according to Animal New York.

The bust is 4 feet tall and made out of a sculpting material that looks bronze, according to Animal New York, which says it documented the installation of the piece in Fort Greene Park on the condition that it hide the identity of those involved.

Naturally, the city wasn’t all too pleased at this artistic expression against the American surveillance state. NBC News New York reports that:

City workers were sent to remove a large bronze bust of NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden after it was placed atop a statue in a Brooklyn park Monday morning.

Animal New York reports that three artists installed the 4-foot, 100-pound sculpture before dawn, fusing the figure to the stone monument with an adhesive. The website, which recorded the installation of the bust, says that the adhesive shouldn’t damage the original statue.

The group of artists told Animal that the bust cost thousands of dollars to make, and that they have made a mold so they can create more Snowden effigies once the one in the park is removed.

To get a little perspective of why the artists created the bust, and why they placed it where they did, check out the following video from Animal New York:

  1. Nice to see that the city “public servants” followed orders so quickly. Can’t let the public see any free expression. Good practice for when they need to start rounding up the dissidents when the time comes.

  2. I remember too well when Greg Hunter named Ed Snowden a traitor. Now see this. Although I am not a UScit, I like to see that there are some between you, who do not forget the hero of yours.
    Well done!!

  3. it’s sad the cops covered it. they work with the cia /nsa / and the entire deep state so what would you expect. shame the people who put it up didn’t consider their audience impact more prudently.

graffiti is better cheaper and quicker for ed snowden. seems like the amount of effort involved in putting up the bust would translate to hundreds of banksi style print graphs all over the city seen by far more people. who needs.

p.s. check out the john oliver bit on snowden you may like it—–i cannot help but both encouraged but also saddened by the john oliver interview of snowden.
encouraged…for obvious reasons, saddened due to the subtext.

    1) the reality that ‘the public’ are mostly morons is actually true. makes you think twice about what you really think can be possible

1a) oliver’s comedy of ‘dick picks’ cheapened the topic by implicity confront the idiocy of his audience. denigrating rather than elavating his audience. subtext being that only morons care about this. he didn’t conduct a serious interview , brought a ridiculous chocolate oscar to make fun of his movie, rather than talk about it, and as a whole led an interview for dunces. at times i was not even convinced oliver went to russia or was in the same room. note that not a single shot had oliver and snowden clearly in the same Frame. only those frames had oliver and the back of snowdens head. my conspiracy sense tingles with these kinds of things.

    2) that the hbo corporate model has now co-opted the dialogue for ‘reform’ is disturbing. for all of john olivers seeming ‘dissidence’ , hbo is in fact a corporate entitiy bent of underhandedly decieving the public and its audiences through misdirection. there is no question that john oliver, let alone the COMEDY FORMAT AS A WHOLE, is there to spoon feed and dumb down the public as well as very subtly and purposefully twist and warp the realities of what needs to be done. if you use your critical brain and do your homework , applying it to the j.oliver format AND substance/content you will see between the lines that he, like john stewart and other info-tainment makers are selling passivity wrapped in self righteousness and laughter like a psychological pig in a blanket.

    3) oliver correctly points out a major date is coming up for patriot act legislation to expire. and no one is going to cover it. business as usual.
