Even the Author of the Patriot Act Slams the NSA and Eric Holder on Spying

You know it’s bad when the author of what might be the most unconstitutional bill in U.S. history criticizes you for being too authoritarian on civil rights.  Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wisc.), the man who introduced the Patriot Act in October 2001 has written a letter to Eric Holder at the Department of Injustice expressing dismay about the aggressive interpretation of the Patriot Act.  All indications are that this guy is merely playing politics and doesn’t really care much about the Constitution, but it still offers some precious irony.

Here are some excerpts:

As the author of the Patriot Act, I am extremely troubled by the FBI’s interpretation of this legislation. While I believe the Patriot Act appropriately balanced national security concerns and civil rights, I have always worried about potential abuses.

“The Bureau’s broad application for phone records was made under the so-called business records provision of the Act.  I do not believe the broadly drafted FISA order is consistent with the requirements of the Patriot Act. Seizing phone records of millions of innocent people is excessive and un-American.”

  1. People need to lighten up and not worry so much. It’s not like the USA gov has secret prisons or is going around killing innocent people.
Relax people. Have a Coke or Pepsi. Eat a burger. Watch TV. There is nothing to worry about.

  2. What is the maximum penalty for high gov’t officials who violate the constitution? Anyone?

Sensenbrenner, Holder, and Obama are all guilty of treason in my book. But I’m no constitutional scholar.
