Meet Brandon Bryant: The Drone Operator Who Quit After Killing a Child

Bryant saw a flash on the screen: the explosion. Parts of the building collapsed. The child had disappeared. Bryant had a sick feeling in his stomach.

“Did we just kill a kid?” he asked the man sitting next to him.

“Yeah, I guess that was a kid,” the pilot replied.

“Was that a kid?” they wrote into a chat window on the monitor.

Then, someone they didn’t know answered, someone sitting in a military command center somewhere in the world who had observed their attack. “No. That was a dog,” the person wrote.

They reviewed the scene on video. A dog on two legs?

– From The Woes of an American Drone Operator published in Der Spiegel

The above article is a must read for every American citizen, particularly those that get up in arms about domestic gun control, but never think twice about the horror caused by our foreign policy, which regularly murders innocent children overseas.  This story was also covered by the UK’s Daily Mail and they write:

A former U.S. drone operator has opened up about the toll of killing scores of innocent people by pressing a button from a control room in New Mexico.

But, after following orders to shoot and kill a child in Afghanistan, he knew he couldn’t keep doing what he was doing and quit the military.

The worst part about this story, other than the story itself, is that I have to go to UK and German media to read about it.  Pathetic.

Mike

  1. What suprises you about having to access a foreign newspaper for some actual news where its world news or something happening in the US?

I tell you what’s sad, I’m old enough to remember how at one time Pravada with the propaganda horn for the communist Soviet Union…

Now a days that has all changed, changed for the better IMHO…

I find Pravda, the UK Daily Mail, the UK Telegraph, and the wide variety of Mexican newspapers online to be quite a bit more informative of both world event and many if not most domestic events then ANY of the US newspapers…

Regarding Brandon Bryan, obviously he didn’t understand what he was getting into…

War is what it is and there are no innocents regarless of the lofty blatherings of politicos around the world…

    • Count them. Don’t get paranoid. Your government wants you believe there are terrorists on every corner.
And don’t believe the Daily Mail either – it’s a rubbish paper!

  2. So many people are yell for gun control and turn in all fight video games put bullet proof clothes on children yet one police department wants to use drones here no one spoke about the real problems that are going on that might push some 20 year old man to go off the deep end but the guns caused it the video game he played made him do it or were not monitoring mentally disturbed people enough how about the fact that this country is being pushed over a cliff while people in government play games with our futures and that all we here is how In Jan. Everything changes for the worst andonly the richest will survive with all that is going on people can’t see why someone would lose it and how would you know that this person has emotional problems if he hasn’t done anything to show it until its too late but what really gets me is the guy that stated how he has planned out the best mental health in the country and all the tax payers should give him more money to piss off because the mental health in California is a poor excuse where the doctors play god with your health by keeping people from getting their meds refilled if they miss an appointment and that is wrong for one you are not suppose to stop taking them and if you have a family member that needs help good luck and this guy wants just like congress does the tax payer middle class and lower to pay more money they act like we are the rich people and have all the money I hope that before more money is given to them that perhaps they should be replaced with people more capable of doing their job.either way all of it is a sad state of affairs

  3. This is bad way to run a war..but the talibanis kill even more children and civilians . Quiting and runing away from war is handing over afganistan to talibanis. Is that a better option ?

The kid would anyway die under talibanis.Either as suicide bomber or asjeehadi who murders western civilians. Its dumb to lose the big picture.

  4. Our government will only be happy when they can kill indiscriminately, without ridicule by the press or masses….almost there! The irony of a government and president that want to control guns here at home, yet has no problem lobbing high explosives into dwelling that may or may not contain their target, in addition to various innocents. Back in the day, our soldiers were told “there are no innocents” as a way to stop them from admitting what wrongs they were committing. I’d love to see the training methods that the Air Force uses to brainwash these drone operators so they do not rebel prior to killing an innocent. Our own peace prize prez revels in the killing of a child, justified with “he should have had better parents”. It seems barrack Obama could have used parents who instilled a sense of Godly morality in his lame ass. I think we’d all be better off if this was the case. Strolling down this path a little further, what happens to politicians souls when they get elected. How does one “switch off” morality when convenient? How does one live with oneself when your very acts kill, impoverish, destroy the lives of those you were elected to serve? All the while you lie to our faces, telling us that the shit sandwich is good for us (even though you never have to take a bite). It’s enough to make one want to….

  5. Who joins the military and has questions about killing? I wonder what this fine fellow thinks nukes are for? I wonder what he thought he’d be doing as a drone operator. Towing advertisments?
